The character of "the Dude" in The Big Lebowski (1998) was based on political activist Jeff Dowd. In the '60s, the Seattle Seven member was jailed for starting a riot at a Vietnam protest, and spent the better half of the'70s drinking White Russians and smoking Mary Jane. He later became involved in the film industry and developed a friendship with Joel and Ethan Coen, who realized they'd found their main man. Jeff Bridges' transformation into the Coen brothers' muse wasn't exactly a stretch — 50 percent of the Dude's wardrobe came from Bridges' own closet, including those famous jelly sandles. Tonight, for the tenth year running, SF Indiefest pays tribute to the cult classic with the famous Big Lebowski Party. Don your bathrobe, throw back some White Russians, and pay homage to his Dudeness. Bedhead and jelly sandles especially encouraged.
