Aided by her genre-defying band, the Get Down Stay Down, Thao Nguyen plays folk music with such vigor that it seems like she might not be able to survive without it. She sings about childhood fear and uncertainty with authority, using her acoustic guitar and a pliant voice to hash out the finer points of influences that range from early-'90s slacker-savant indie rock to marching-band tunes. Most recently, Thao has gained well-deserved renown with her national tour alongside WNYC's Radiolab show. Oh, and she also happens to be incredibly funny — check out the band's shorts "The Hand of God" and "The Art of My Loins," to start. In support of their brand new album, We The Common, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down play a free in-store show at Amoeba SF tonight.
