Office drone Harvey Pekar couldn't be less like a traditional comic-book hero — he has none of the superpowers or tights-based uniforms you expect from the genre. But a coincidental meeting with illustrator Robert Crumb inspired him to record his own life in pen and ink, resulting in the marvelously self-deprecating strip American Splendor, which relates every detail of Pekar's ordinary existence — from banal job to battle with cancer to relationship with comics fan Joyce Brabner. Tonight, SF Sketchfest pays homage to the tenth anniversary of the 2003 film, in which Paul Giamatti is perfectly cast as the downbeat anti-hero.

SF Sketchfest says…

SF Sketchfest celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the independent and innovative Harvey Pekar biopic that seamlessly blends real-life characters and the actors who play them along with animated sequences. Actor Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), who played "Genuine Nerd Toby Radloff," plus the real Toby Radloff and producer Ted Hope, will be on hand to tell stories about the making of the film and the real life people it captures.
