Jaimal Yogis: The Fear Project

Tuesday Jan 8, 2013 (6:30pm)

Book Passage

1 Ferry Building, #42

Jaimal Yogis was 17 years old when he left his home in Sacramento to learn how to surf in Hawai'i. His challenging journey from first-timer to bona fide surfer became a living metaphor for a coincident spiritual journey into Zen Buddhism and Zen's relationship with the sea. Yogis went on to earn a Journalism degree from Columbia, write a book about his surfing and monastic experiences (Saltwater Buddha, which is now being made into a film), and become a full-time San Francisco-based surfer and journalist. His new book, The Fear Project, is a narrative exploration into fear — what it's for, how it works, how to overcome it, and even how to leverage it as a motivational factor — sprinkled with stories of all of the harrowing stuff he put himself through during his research. Oh, and as an added narrative bonus, Yogis plans to join ultra swimmer Jamie Patrick in night-swimming under the Bay Bridge from Yerba Buena Island to his book release at Book Passage.

Book Passage says…

Who among us hasn't been paralyzed by fear? From "small" fears like public speaking to "big" fears such as death, fear is what often holds us back from reaching our full potential. In his new book, journalist and surfer Jaimal Yogis sets out to confront his fears and to find out whether there may actually be benefits to this often crippling emotional state.
