If you'll excuse this analogy, local darling Dave Eggers first came onto the literary scene in the same manner (and in the same year) that Coldplay edged into the general populace's musical consciousness: first the single "Yellow" was getting a bunch of airplay, and then suddenly Coldplay was one of the biggest acts in the world. Eggers' 2000 debut A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius — by turns self-deprecating and self-aggrandizing, always navel-gazing, at times heartbreaking and staggering — put a young Dave Eggers on the map. And then, in relatively short order, Eggers was the co-founder of 826 Valencia, the founder and editor of McSweeney's, and the author of six books, with a hand in social justice and arts education causes at every turn. Eggers appears tonight as part of the impeccably-curated City Arts & Lectures "On Arts" series, which benefits 826 Valencia's scholarship program.
