Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, the Oscar-nominated duo behind Jesus Camp (2006), have another winner on their hands with Detropia. Once a kingpin in the automobile, manufacturing, and music industries, Detroit is now a waning metropolis on the verge of bankruptcy. For this documentary, the directors have crafted a moving and poetic portrait of the city through interviews with various feisty inhabitants struggling to make sense of its current state and hoping for a brighter future.

This is the San Francisco premiere of Detropia. The filmmakers appear in person after the 6:30pm show on Friday and 3pm show on Saturday.

Roxie Theater says…

With its vivid, painterly palette and haunting score, DETROPIA sculpts a dreamlike collage of a grand city teetering on the brink of dissolution. As houses are demolished by the thousands, automobile-company wages plummet, institutions crumble, and tourists gawk at the "charming decay," the film's vibrant, gutsy characters glow and erupt like flames from the ashes.
