The News, a monthly evening of queer performance, debuted in February at SOMArts on a particularly auspicious day: on the morning of The News' first show, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the ruling that Prop 8 was unconstitutional, paving a smoother road towards same-sex rights in California. As performance nights go, The News is patently uninterested in posh or niceties, opting instead for raw experimentation — performers present finished pieces or works in progress, and there's time after each show for the performers to receive feedback. From politically-charged striptease to singing/songwriting to outrageously costumed theater, it's hard to predict what you'll see at a night at The News, but chances are good that it'll be provocative.

SOMArts says…

The News is the new place to see fresh, queer performance by Bay Area artists. On the first Tuesday of each month The News will spotlight performance pieces, experiments, and works in progress by pre-selected solo artists, groups, or troupes. An informal session for critical feedback follows the performances.
