The Mission-based correlate to the annual Mr. Marina competition is hitting the Elbo Room tonight to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Hosted by team Slap Cancer, the Mr. Marina competition has been met with lots of love/hate in the past, for taking some of the most common neighborhood stereotypes ("Nominate someone who enjoys a Balboa Burger with a side of cougar") and crowning a self-proclaimed douchebag in the name of fighting blood cancer. Tonight's Mr. Mission version features six competitors who either live or work in the Mission District and who embody a certain subsection of the neighborhood to its fullest — cutoffs, beer breath, crappy facial hair and all. The competitors include longtime Mission resident Corner Store George ("If George's phone dies and you need to contact him, he's either at Rhea's, the Phoenix, or his apartment"), LA defector Naveen Agrawal ("He enjoys long, shirtless strolls through Dolores, rediscovering his spirit of existentialism at Yoga to the People, and cultivating his collection of shawls"), and even a wild card candidate. Why show up tonight? Drink specials and a good cause.

Slap Cancer says…

Think of the last time you saw a guy walking down the street and thought to yourself, "Is that a mustache or a dick under his nose? Maybe it's both…" Remember the jubilation, the joy, the moisture even, in that moment? Now. We bring to you, the distilled versions. The extract of the Mission. The non-reconstituted Mission concentrate (with pulp). In one place. One night. One competition to determine who will be... Mr. MISSION.
