Herman Melville: "Some sea-captains, before shipping a man, always ask him whether he can sing out at a rope." Sea chanteys do more than just pass the time. Engaging the breath and voice and ears, these call-and-respond songs helped sailors act collaboratively with each other, giving cadence and rhythm to demanding tasks that required synchronous cooperation from an entire crew. Songs sung only on the way to home port, or only when embarking, chanteys also bound a crew emotionally — a necessity for long, confined voyages on ship. Come aboard tonight (and the first Saturday of each month) to explore the interaction between movement and music, or just to enjoy a bit of maritime history over song and cider.
