At their best, the New Pornographers' buzzy guitar-pop songs — which also double as cerebral concepts of buzzy guitar-pop songs — comprise one of modern indie-rock's great arguments for style as substance. Therefore, we understand if the prospect of crooning, folk-pop intimacy and personal, emotionally transparent songwriting from New Pornos honcho A.C. Newman — the kind of which can be heard on his latest solo album, Shut Down the Streets — doesn't flood you with anticipation. You'd be missing out, though: Newman's lyrical and melodic flash dials down to nice effect, and he examines major life events (the death of his mother, the birth of a son) with a soft-touch grace that deserves a wide audience. Get down with the new sincerity at tonight's gig at the Independent.

The Independent says…

You might know A.C. Newman as Carl Newman, the spry redheaded leader of The New Pornographers. That band puts Newman's brilliant songs in the hands of a varied crew of insanely talented pals; with 'The Slow Wonder,' Newman's own talents take center stage, showcasing him as a classic, if eccentric, songwriter, part of a lineage that includes Ray Davies, Johnny Rivers, Harry Nilsson, Colin Blunstone, Dave Edmunds, Andy Partridge, Wayne Coyne, Ben Folds, Britt Daniel, or any other number of guys he doesn't exactly sound like but with whom Carl could readily match wits.
