In celebration of the release of David Foster Wallace's The Pale King — which is already garnering the kind of critical praise that will easily place it among his most important novels — tonight, performance group Word for Word adapt the unfinished posthumous book to the stage. As usual, with City Arts & Lectures, expect a provocative evening.

City Arts & Lectures says…

David Foster Wallace's unfinished final novel, The Pale King, will be released on April 15.  The book is set in an IRS processing center in Illinois in the mid-1980s, and tells the story of a crew of entry-level drones and their attempts to do their jobs in the face of soul-crushing boredom. The Pale King grapples with questions of life's meaning, and of the ultimate value of work and family. Although the novel was incomplete at the time of his death in 2008, it showcases Wallace's extraordinary imaginative talents. Actors from local performing arts group Word for Word will perform selected pieces from the novel.
