Are you familiar with the plight of Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi? In 2010 he was arrested for acting against national security and creating anti-regime propaganda and later sentenced to a six-year jail term and a 20-year ban on directing movies, writing screenplays, and giving any interviews. He's also not allowed to leave Iran during that time period. Just before sentencing, he invited a friend over to his apartment to film a documentary, the result being This is Not a Film. The edited work, which is essential viewing for anyone who gives a fudge about cinema, made it out of Iran in a flash-drive hidden inside a cake and received a screening at Cannes. Released theatrically earlier this year, this testament to Panahi's courage and passion for filmmaking has landed a spot on the Oscar shortlist. Today, you can catch it at the Museum of the Moving Image as part of its Curators' Choice: The Best of 2012 series.
