Sort of like a staycation, the Rural Route Film Festival is a three-day series that transports you places outside the bustle of the city. Now in its 12th year, this edition includes premieres, special sneak previews, and a curious assortment of shorts. Opening with filmmaker Ron Fricke's cinematographic masterpiece Barakaother highlights are Jason Cortlund and Julia Halperin's off-beat, foodie-friendly narrative Now, Forager; and Boardwalk Empire producer Rudd Simmon's The First Season, a documentary about a couple having a go at dairy farming. The fest closes with a screening of two shorts programs, co-curated by Rooftop Films, taking place at Brooklyn Grange's flagship green roof farm in Queens.
