The Gaslight Anthem's breakout record, The '59 Sound, garnered much love for pulling off two improbable feats: wrestling away pop punk from the young and guyliner'ed and making now-ubiquitous Springsteenisms sound fresh. Still, you can only subsist on meat and potatoes for so long, and despite the record's anthemic populism, the Jersey boys would clearly need to grow. June's American Slang isn't exactly a Nebraskan reinvention, but with richer harmonies, more varied tempos, and a much looser rhythm section, it's a fine step forward — and proof that Brian Fallon and the gang realize that the best way to ape Bruce is to evolve.
