The story of Marilyn Monroe has been told and retold, but Liz Garbus' documentary, Love, Marilyn, does more than recount her tragic tale, it actually brings the spirit of the starlet back to life. Not following your typical documentary format, the film features actresses, including Glenn Close, Uma Thurman, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, and Lindsay Lohan, reading from never-before-seen personal papers, diaries, and letters written by Marilyn. Garbus mixes these impassioned monologues with archival footage, photos, interviews, and texts written about Marilyn by the likes of Elia Kazan, Norman Mailer, Billy Wilder, and Gloria Steinem, also read by actors. The resulting work, the release of which coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the actress' passing, allows the real Marilyn, a genuine talent riddled with anxiety, to stand up and be reconsidered in a wonderfully poginant manner.
