Everyone suffers in a recession, even the gangsters in the latest film from The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director, Andrew Dominik. Based on George V. Higgins' novel Cogan's Trade, Dominick's cynical crime-thriller sees his characters treading through the weeks leading up to the 2008 election. Brad Pitt plays Jackie, a seasoned enforcer who has been brought in to restore order after a mob-protected card game has been rolled. Joining Pitt are a terrific ensemble including Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), rising star Scoot Mcnairy (Monsters), Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom), and James Gandolfini, who is inspired in is his small role as Mickey, the down on his luck hitman. And while the film is finely acted and the twists compelling, for us the icing on this layer cake is Greig Fraser's inventive cinematography.
