Does the name Ginger Baker ring any bells? Or more appropriately, crash any cymbals, as Baker is one of the most influential drummers of all time. A fiery redhead (before the greys set-in), Baker was a member of two short-lived but legendary circa-1960s rock projects, Cream and Blind Faith. By applying his dexterity, ear for composition, and passion for jazz drumming to rock music, he flabbergasted fans and inspired musicians. In the early '70s, he voyaged to Nigeria where he fell in with Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, further adding to his arsenal. But a crazy temperament and massive quantities of heroin can throw a wrench in even the most gifted drummer's works. Jay Bulger, a former boxer and model turned journalist and music-video director, tangles with the 73-year-old in his documentary, Beware of Mr. Baker. A winner at the 2012 SXSW film festival, the film features an interview with Baker in his home in South Africa meshed with archival footage, animations, and commentary from family, friends, and admirers. A must-see for fans of '60s and '70s rock; ah, the glory days.
