After five years with the band, keyboardist Franz Nicolay left the Hold Steady early this year. "They have their one big idea," he explained, "making literate, wordy lyrics over big anthemic rock — and the last two records were about as good as I felt like I could do with that idea." Good point. Solo Nicolay hearkens back to the gypsy-klezmer flavors of his pre-Craig Finn days — befitting a man of Nicolay's accordion and banjo love and dandy mustache — while retaining some classic-rock residuals. Try the fan favorite, "Jeff Penalty," about seeing the latter-day Dead Kennedys play with a Jello Biafra ringer on vocals.

(Le) Poisson Rouge says…

At the Gallery Franz Nicolay Franz Nicolay is that mustachioed man-about-town and musician you may have seen with such groups as The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society. He is the founder of new-music collective Anti-Social Music, and is working on a book for Vol. 1 Press. ************************************************* Barbez (acoustic) Barbez takes shape in a sunstruck phantasm; Kurt Weill swims the length of a still pond, underwater The Residents are refurbishing their home, Erik Satie descends from above to lie in the grass and sip seltzer. Shapes emerge from flowering trees and a Dionysian wedding dance ensues. Provoked by such musics as French musette, Argentine tango, post-war classical and pre-MTV punk, Barbez wrings these disparate worlds to form anew in the band’s own soundscape.
