From the snappy opening scene to the somber closing one, Clifford Odets' Golden Boy is naggingly familiar. Why? Since Golden Boy was first performed in 1937, its characters have become archetypes of American drama, and the plot has been reworked in countless other plays and movies. This classic rags-to-riches tale chronicles a talented young man as he struggles to choose between two careers at opposite ends of the spectrum: concert violin and professional boxing. Superbly directed by Bartlett Scher, who has overseen many of Lincoln Center Theater's outstanding revivals in recent years, and performed by a cast that must be the envy of other shows on Broadway, Golden Boy is a good, old-fashioned drama done right.
