Simon Keenlyside just completed his run as Prospero at the Met in Thomas Adès'  The Tempest — a role the composer wrote to specifically suit to the British baritone's equally strong lyric voice and acting ability. For one performance only, he sings a role that could have been written for him as well, the crazed title character of Alban Berg's Wozzeck. Based on Buchner's play, the opera presents in bare-bone vignettes the final unhappy days of a chronically unhappy man's life. If it sounds unpleasant, Berg intended it to be, but when performed under the right circumstances Wozzeck is thrilling, rewarding and unforgettable.  If Keenlyside is the right singer, than there is no better than Esa-Pekka Salonen to conduct it.
