Art: Installation

Meta-Monumental Garage Sale

Nov 17, 2012 – Nov 30, 2012

MoMA The Museum of Modern Art (Venue Partner)

11 W 53rd St

We never thought people would be haggling over the price of second-hand salt and pepper shakers in MoMA's Atrium, but it's all part of Martha Rosler's master plan, which is currently installed at the museum from now until November 30th. A grand performance art piece, Meta-Monumental Garage Sale is adapted from a work Rosler staged in 1973 and later travelled to museums around the globe. The installation invites visitors to browse and purchase the second-hand goods that she has either donated or collected from friends, family, museum employees, and the general public. And while objects are the fabric of the work, human exchange is an essential component with Rosler and her assistants on hand to engage shoppers for the duration of the project. The items aren't necessarily priced to sell, but value is in the eye of the beholder.
