Edna Ferber's classic novel about life in Texas from the Depression up to the beginning of the Cold War is re-examined in the Public's sprawling new musical, Giant. Trimmed to a fighting weight of a little over three hours, this ambitious production with its loft-dwelling 17-piece orchestra and army of 22 actors tackles a multitude of issues such as love, loss, civil rights, and the repercussions of the Texas oil boom as they relate to the cattle-rich Benedict family. Tony-nominated composer Michael John LaChiusa delivers a more-than-capable musical score, and the story benefits from Michael Greif's direction and the acumen of the lighting and set designers who navigate us through the vivid, multigenerational saga. A co-production with the Dallas Theater Center, this large work makes a grand impression.
