When young Brooklyn-based playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury Googled "black people Germany," she came across the largely unknown colonial German genocide of the Herero tribe in Namibia at the turn of the century. After her attempt at writing a traditional historical play on the events left her feeling embarrassed, she created this show, a stunning exploration of the limits of art in addressing unthinkable historical atrocities. Three black actors and three white actors attempt to create a piece about the genocide, but fail in the face of their own racial tensions. Simultaneously funny and disturbing, this is one of the best shows of the year.
