Disgraced dives into taboo subjects — politics, race, and religion — with unmitigated gusto. A dinner between two interracial couples is at the center of the play, and predictably, the friends don't get beyond the first course before tensions erupt. Written by Ayad Akhtar (best known for co-authoring and starring in The War Within), Disgraced hums along on well-tuned dialogue that dissects Islam and Judiasm with relish, and The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi leads a stellar cast as Amir, a Pakistani-American lawyer who is ambivalent about his upbringing.
