"Feminism lurked in the wings during the Gilded Age," intimates Broadway's latest revival of The Heiress. A theatrical adaptation of Henry James' novel Washington Square, The Heiress takes place in the sumptuous New York City townhouse of Dr. Sloper (David Strathairn), a prominent physician, and his gauche daughter Catherine (a believably awkward Jessica Chastain). When ardent but impoverished bachelor Morris Townsend comes calling (Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame), Dr. Sloper is convinced he's after Catherine for her substantial inheritance. Questions of class, love, and happiness unspool as the romance develops, and while Chastain made her name in 2011 with leading roles in major films — The Tree of Life, Take Shelter, and The Help — she brings an undeniable luminosity to the stage as Catherine morphs from a frizzy-haired, insecure wall-flower into a confident heiress.
