When we heard Paul Rudd, Michael Shannon, and Ed Asner were in a play together, we had a "stop the presses" moment. Of course a lovable cast doesn't always equal on-stage chemistry, but in the case of this production of Craig Wright's Grace, we saw skyrockets — or at least that's what the Bobby Brady in us experienced. Set in two adjacent apartments in a condo complex, Rudd plays Steve, a "Jesus freak" who has moved to Florida with his wife Sara to open a chain of gospel-themed hotels. Shannon is cast as the couple's neighbor, a NASA engineer recovering from a deadly car crash, while Asner makes an indelible impression in his small role as Karl, the chatty German-born exterminator. Wright, a former Emmy-nominee known for his writing on Six Feet Under and Lost, contributes a stirring and well-spun script that poses thoughtful questions about faith and religion. Even days after seeing it, the recurring line, "I want to go back," still rings in our ears. We'd like to go back too, but in our case, it's to experience this provocative and divinely crafted production again.
