Literary geeks should flock to the Transport Group's theatrical adaptation of Jonathan Franzen's House for Sale. Franzen, a National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist, included House for Sale in his memoir, The Discomfort Zone (2006), and the Transport Group — an OBIE award-winning company — has staged it as a round robin of storytelling. The five actors alternate as the narrator, yet the choice to indicate each actor's turn to speak with a different colored light bulb (which director Daniel Fish decides live each night), is a needlessly distracting one. Fortunately, the performers and Franzen's gloriously sharp prose have enough substance and focus to carry the production.

The Duke Theater says…

Gorgeously conceived into theatrical terms by renowned director Daniel Fish, HOUSE FOR SALE follows award-winning author Jonathan Franzen as he travels to his childhood home in Missouri to prepare to put it on the market following his mother’s passing. Exploring ideas of change, loss, and the value of the “quintessential American Dream,” HOUSE FOR SALE is a daring exploration of both the merging of art forms as well as the very essence of wrestling with one's past.
