If you were 158-years old, you'd likely be in need of a few nips and tucks now and again, which is why it's not surprising the Public decided to give its 19th-century digs a $40 million facelift. Finally ready for primetime, the new, more community-minded space is being celebrated with eight weeks of events. Anchored by a block party and open house, other fun happenings include a reunion of the original cast of February House, a public forum with Anna Deavere Smith and David Simon, and free screenings (reservations required) of Passing Strange, Much Ado About Nothing, and a documentary about the founder of the Public, Joe Papp in Five Acts. Always one of our favorite spots for discovering up-and-coming playwrights and performers, we're excited to see what the future holds for this revitalized cultural institution.
