War and Peace has an unfair reputation as being unwieldy. Not only is there the outstanding Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, Bondarchuk's film and Prokofiev's opera both humanize the epic.  Now there is Dave Malloy's sexy and all-out wonderful Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. This clever mix of opera-floor show portrays the section of Tolstoy's novel concerning naive Natasha's duplicity among Moscow high society.  Malloy strongly emphasizes that while most of the players end up casualties or Decemberists,  there is nothing peaceful about her situation. To further this, performers and audience inhabit the same tight space resembling the bar car on the Moscow/St. Petersburg night train.  Each character has their own musical theme, and the Tolstoyan view of humanity is intact.
