Tuesday 5/21 @ Norton Museum of Art
Early Rolling Stone reached success not only for its thorough, audacious coverage of rock music, liberal politics, and pop culture, but also thanks to Annie Leibovitz’s compelling images that gave life to the stories inside. The famed photographer's iconic portraits of artists, musicians, and celebrities became so celebrated they often eclipsed some of her other work. This exhibition features 39 photographs acquired by the Norton, which reflect a dialogue between artist and subject — going beyond simply capturing a moment. There still are images here of celebs (from Cindy Sherman and Al Sharpton to Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise), but also other varied shots — overall a testament to how multifarious Leibovitz's career has been. And yes, it's a trek up to West Palm Beach, but make a day trip out of it and visit the whole museum because the Norton has quite an impressive permanent collection to boot.
