La Luz de Jesus' newest group show presents the work of four talented painters. Sisters of the Inquisition by Shaun Berke is a group of classically influenced oil paintings depicting nuns, while Hudson Marquez's series of acrylic-on-canvas paintings, High Humidity, references his hometown of New Orleans. Each subject — Jayne Mansfield, Bourbon Street, Lee Harvey Oswald, Professor Longhair, and more — is related to that city. Manga artist Junko Mizuno's Euphoria depicts her sugary-sweet, ultra-feminine subjects, while Lisa Petrucci, known for her adorable, rebellious Kickass Kuties, reflects her love for vintage kitsch, dolls, toys, and pinup art in Come Play With Me.

La Luz de Jesus says…

La Luz de Jesus Gallery was established in 1986 as the brainchild of entrepreneur and art collector Billy Shire, considered largely responsible for fostering a new school of California art and prompting JUXTAPOZ Magazine to dub him "the Peggy Guggenheim of Lowbrow." Showcasing mainly figurative, narrative paintings and unusual sculpture, the exhibitions are post-pop with content ranging from folk to outsider to religious to sexually deviant. A new exhibit opens on the first Friday of each month, with an opening reception that DETAILS Magazine calls "the biggest and best party in Los Angeles."
