The 1933 Group's supremely stylish new Hollywood bar Sassafras evokes another time and place. All 1933 Group bars (Bigfoot Lodge, Oldfield's, Thirsty Crow, et al) have great style, but the destination-worthy Sassafras ratchets it up a notch. It must be the group's most ambitious undertaking: for this two-year project, a Savannah, Georgia townhouse was taken apart, transported across the country, and reconstructed onsite, comple with vines dangling from soaring ceilings, gorgeous vintage details, several fireplaces, and charming nooks conducive to conversation. Sassafras isn't just about style, however. The staff is warm and friendly, and they serve fantastic cocktails made with top-notch ingredients (many made in-house) and crafted with great precision. The standout cocktail, the Toasted Pecan Julep, consists of rum, brandy, fresh mint, and toasted-pecan liqueur made on the premises. Other highly drinkable choices include the Blackstrap Old Fashioned made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, blackstrap molasses, and house-made cherry-vanilla bitters; the Grilled Peach Punch, consisting of rum, brandy, spices and milk; and the Apple Moonshine Crusta, a concoction of moonshine infused on the premises with apples and cinnamon and added to lemon and brown sugar, then served in a glass with a cinnamon-sugar rim. A rotating 1920s dry cleaners rack salvaged in NYC revolves above the bar, displaying tempting bottles of barrel-aged cocktails including such classics as the Sazerac, the Mai Tai, the Vieux Carre, and the Manhattan. This ambience-rich new addition to a less-trodden part of Hollywood (Vine St. south of Fountain Avenue) is a true standout.
