Melodrama master Douglas Sirk directs All That Heaven Allows, part 1950s tearjerker, and part Technicolor dream. Jane Wyman plays a wealthy widow who falls in love with Rock Hudson, an unconventional gardener ten years her junior, whom she encounters when he comes to prune her trees. The widow, torn between love and midcentury social respectability, earns the dismay and contempt of both her adult children and her social set. Featuring breathtaking art direction and the ever-exceptional supporting talents of Agnes Moorehead (aka Endora on Bewitched), All That Heaven Allows is a biting social commentary on the restrictive mores of the time.
