Opening Reception: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 6–9pm

For his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, New York-based artist Jordan Wolfson presents a new video installation that weaves together the disparate histories of popular entertainment, animated cartoons and digital video. Marking Wolfson’s first in-depth exploration of computer-generated imagery (CGI), the project at REDCAT reflects upon the reemergence of 3D technologies as a commercial enterprise and reveals the points at which the history of cartoons and pre-cinematic animation inform the history of modernism. Filmed on location in Paris, New York and Los Angeles, Wolfson’s latest project mixes digital animation and live-action video to further an ongoing inquiry into the function of artworks as devices that make the experience of time and space visible. The third in a trilogy of video animations that include animation, masks (2011) and Con Leche (2009), Wolfson’s most recent work looks at the ways in which constructions of character are afforded and problematized by time-based media. Internationally acclaimed for his films, videos and installations that position improbable scenarios within close proximity to personal lived experience, Wolfson’s works engage new possibilities for meaning and the interpretative response to images.

Jordan Wolfson (b. 1980, New York) graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and currently lives and works in New York. He was the recipient of the prestigious Cartier Award in 2009, was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and has been the subject of solo exhibitions and screenings in national and international museums and cultural institutions, including CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; Swiss Institute, New York; GAMeC, Bergamo, Italy; and Kunsthalle Zürich.
