Don't be turned off by holiday-themed theater; like its young protagonist, Coney Island Christmas has bigger aspirations. Part A Star Is Born, part Jewish Annie, Coney tells the schmaltz-free tale of big-voiced Shirley Abromowitz, a Depression-era girl caught headfirst in a holiday storm, playing Jesus Christ in her school play and facing the wrath of her Jewish immigrant parents. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies (based on a short story by author Grace Paley), Coney Island Christmas has the feel of a contemporary classic; it's refreshingly irreverent about Christianity (in a Book Of Mormon type way), and the book makes you root for its gutsy heroine. The play makes an impressive worldwide debut at the Geffen this month; perhaps with more music (for a play about a musical, showtunes are conspiciously absent), Coney Island Christmas could snowball its way to Broadway.
