Though Café del Rey's waterfront setting is a gorgeous enticement, the food here is the real lure. Talented executive chef Daniel Roberts has two decades of experience in restaurant kitchens and it's reflected in his inventive cuisine inspired by the Italian and French Rivieras. A point of pride for Chef Roberts is the large amount of items made fresh in the kitchen: the pasta, bread, ricotta, mozzarella, gelato, and limoncello are made on site, and the smoked salmon is house-cured. Among the remarkable starters are a truffle pizza topped with black truffle, caramelized onions, truffle oil, and reggiano; and the agnolotti of butternut squash and burrata, topped with brown butter, sage, and pecorino. A unique lunch main dish is the Cinque Terre. A daily, ever-rotating collection of five small dishes influenced by five Italian villages, the choices can include duck confit with green apple risotto, sage and reggiano; unique pasta and seafood dishes; seasonal salads; and one dessert. The desserts are remarkable. The pear fig tarte tatin is served with pear paper (a tuile made of pear puree), spiced warm caramel, and crème fraiche gelato, while the chocolate bread pudding is enhanced by chocolate sauce, house-made marshmallow cream, and candied walnuts. The attentive service, unfussy but elegant atmosphere, and excellent culinary creations make Café del Rey an ideal escape.
