Playa is the newest restaurant opened by John Rivera Sedlar, whose downtown restaurant, Rivera, earned great acclaim after its 2009 opening. Playa's beautiful Beverly Blvd. space has a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, but the real star is the remarkable pan-Latin cuisine. Sedlar creates highly original small-plate versions of indigenous Latin dishes influenced by his travels to South America, Spain, and Central America. His trip to Spain with olive-oil expert Alfonso J. Fernandez inspired Sedlar to use only the best-quality olive oils from Spain in his restaurant, a touch that greatly enhances Sedlar's lively, unique flavors. His pork carpaccio, made of high-quality artisanal Ibérico pork sliced tissue thin and finished with the aforementioned olive oil from Spain, is phenomenal, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Other excellent dishes include the piquillo relleno, a piquillo pepper deliciously stuffed with cheese, raisins, and chorizo; savory corn flan topped with black quinoa and artfully served in a corn husk bowl; and loup de mer with five sauces. The excellent desserts include a blue corn cake made with olive oil and topped with almond ice cream.  Playa's master mixologists' cocktails include the Streetfighter, a dreamy concoction of white rum, coconut cream, turmeric, pineapple, and mint. Playa is an altogether exciting addition to the Los Angeles restaurant scene.

Playa says…

The name "Playa" doesn’t refer to geography but to the spirit of L.A.'s open-air, laid-back, coastal lifestyle. In its concept, food, drinks, design, and scene, Playa expresses a relaxed new urban Latin vibe as envisioned by chef/owner John Rivera Sedlar and the creative team who have helped him make the restaurant a reality.
