A film we've been lauding this year, Francine screens tonight as part of Time Out New York's special two-day series highlighting their favorite films of 2012. Melissa Leo stars as a woman who, after years of being in prison, tries to make a new life for herself in a small, rural town. Having difficulty connecting with people, she turns to four-legged friends for comfort. Filmmakers Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky, who placed on Filmmaker Magazine's "25 New Faces of Independent Film" in 2007, display incredible restraint in their portrait of seclusion, and Leo is absolutely riveting in the title role. If you're in the mood for an action flick that has a 3D or IMAX version, this well-drawn character study is probably not the way to go.
