Francine isn't a big film and it will likely not be making any Oscar short lists, but based on the strength of Melissa Leo's performance, it definitely deserves attention. Directed by Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky, the film is about a woman who, after years of being in prison, tries to make a new life for herself in a small, rural town. Having difficulty connecting with people, she turns to four-legged friends for comfort. The filmmakers, who placed on Filmmaker Magazine's "25 New Faces of Independent Film" in 2007, display incredible restraint in their portrait of seclusion, and Leo is absolutely riveting in the title role. If you're in the mood for an action flick that has a 3D or IMAX version, this well-drawn character study is probably not the way to go.
