St. Ann's Warehouse

29 Jay St

St Ann's Warehouse breaks in their new DUMBO digs with an explosive new play that remodels August Strindberg's Miss Julie in contemporary South Africa. Adapted and directed by Yael Farber, the drama unfolds in the kitchen of a farm on the eve of Freedom Day, a holiday marking the anniversary of the country's first post-apartheid elections. Julie is the master's daughter, a restless beauty still reeling from a broken engagement. On this night, Julie seeks out John, a handsome black farm worker who is keeping company with his mother and finishing up his chores. As the sexual tension mounts, the two become embroiled in a gruesome and weighty power struggle. An obvious parallel to the current state of South Africa, Farber's story brings to light the rampant inequality that still exists. Resounding performances by Hilda Cronje and Bongile Mantsai and a well-crafted script make the Baxter Theatre Centre's production of Mies Julie a sumptuous meal for any theatre enthusiast.
